Preparing a return for the 2025 tax year — and with it, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) publishes rules and updates that affect both individuals and businesses. Whether you’re filing for the first time or you’re an experienced taxpayer, understanding these changes can help you identify eligible claims, organize your records and understand filing obligations.
At Unity Financial Services, we’ve broken down the most important updates for the 2025 tax year and what they mean for you.
1️⃣ Increase in the Basic Personal Amount (BPA)
The Basic Personal Amount (BPA) has increased to $16,129 in 2025 (compared with $15,705 in 2024). This is the maximum federal amount used to calculate a non-refundable tax credit; it is reduced at higher incomes. It is not a separate cash payment. Provincial amounts differ.
💡 Tip: Review your TD1 form with your employer when your personal circumstances change. The form helps calculate payroll deductions; it does not replace your annual tax return.
2️⃣ Mandatory Digital Filing for Businesses
The CRA continues its digital-first push in 2025:
- Electronic-filing requirements depend on the return type and the applicable rules. There is no general rule that all businesses earning over $10,000 must electronically file every return.
- Filing obligations and penalties must be checked for the particular return, taxpayer and tax year; do not apply one penalty amount to all business filings.
💡 Tip: If you’re a sole proprietor or small business owner, confirm the appropriate filing channel for your return. Personal returns, corporate returns and GST/HST filings use different services. Ask Unity about preparing and filing your applicable returns.
3️⃣ Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) Advance Payments
The Canada Workers Benefit is a refundable credit for eligible working individuals and families with low income. Eligibility and the amount depend on your income and circumstances. Check the CRA’s current advance-payment guidance for the schedule and qualifying conditions; the earlier claim of a new quarterly program starting in 2025 was inaccurate.
✅ Working part-time or as a gig worker does not by itself establish eligibility. Review the income and other criteria when preparing the return.
💡 Tip: Always verify your eligibility when filing — even though the CRA auto-calculates CWB, errors are still possible.
4️⃣ Check eligibility for renovation assistance 🌱
Before committing to an energy upgrade, identify the specific federal, provincial, municipal or utility program and check its current eligibility and application process. The earlier claim of a general new $5,000 refundable Clean Energy Home Renovation Credit was unsupported and should not be relied on.
💡 Tip: Keep quotations, receipts, certifications and any program approvals. Do not assume that a rebate, grant, loan or tax credit has the same rules, or that expenses will qualify after work has begun.
5️⃣ Keep complete cryptocurrency records 💻
Do not use an assumed $500 annual threshold to decide whether cryptocurrency transactions matter for tax. The treatment depends on the transactions and whether the activity is on income or capital account. Provide complete purchase, sale, exchange and other relevant records for review rather than reporting only transactions above an arbitrary amount.
💡 Tip: Keep a detailed log of dates, CAD values, wallets used, and counterparties for every crypto transaction.
6️⃣ Important 2025 Tax Deadlines 📅
- Personal tax return: April 30, 2026
- Self-employed: June 15, 2026 (payment due April 30)
- RRSP contribution deadline: March 2, 2026
⚠️ These dates concern the 2025 tax year, generally filed in 2026. Special circumstances can have different deadlines. Late filing or payment may result in penalties or interest; contact us promptly if a return is outstanding.
