Settling into a new country can be challenging—but Canada offers meaningful support for newcomers from day one. Whether you’re a permanent resident, protected person, or temporary resident (such as a student or worker), there are numerous federal benefits and credits designed to ease your transition and help your family thrive.
In June 2025, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) made it even easier for newcomers to access these benefits through a user-friendly online system.
Who Is Considered a Newcomer?
For benefit eligibility, CRA defines a newcomer as someone in their first year as a Canadian resident for income tax purposes, including:
- Permanent residents
- Protected persons (refugees)
- Temporary residents (students, workers, permit holders)
As soon as you become a tax resident, you’re eligible to apply for federal benefits—often even before your first tax return is filed
